Maypole and beer mugs, lederhosen and Ludwig II – these images from Upper Bavaria shape the image of Germany in the world. Upper Bavaria is all of that – and more. Here tradition meets modernity, rustic village taverns meet experimental star cuisine, old customs meet young events. Traditional breweries flourish alongside craft beer factories. The works of old masters inspire young artists.
Upper Bavaria is framed by the majestic Alps in the south and the blue ribbon of the Danube in the north. Here you can enjoy hiking. Or cycle along the many rivers and lakes, the old salt paths and through the hop gardens. Experience shopping, art and culture in the big city of Munich or in the gems around it. In addition, Upper Bavaria’s mountain world with its cozy winter sports resorts is the cradle for top athletes and a mecca for amateur athletes.
Experience special highlights in Upper Bavaria: Lake Chiemsee, the largest lake in Bavaria, is located here. Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze, towers over the country. And the Hallertau, the largest contiguous hop growing area in the world, is the origin of Bavarian beer enjoyment.
Picturesque landscape panoramas
The two highest mountains in Germany – the Zugspitze at 2,962 meters and the Watzmann at 2,713 meters – are located in the famous Alpine region. The mountains delight both winter and summer sports enthusiasts all year round. Via ferratas over cliffs a thousand meters deep inspire guests in the impressive Berchtesgaden National Park, for example. Hikers are also enthusiastic about the unique cultural landscapes such as the humpback meadows. Formed at the end of the Würm Ice Age, the ground formations of humps and hollows are a specialty that only exist in the Alpine region. The inhabitants have been mowing the meadows by hand with a scythe since the eighth century. In doing so, they are preserving a precious natural asset and the habitat of rare animals and plants.
The beautiful landscape of Upper Bavaria was also once discovered by fairytale king Ludwig II, who chose it as the location for his castles Linderhof in the Ammergau Alps and Herrenchiemsee on the island of the same name in the middle of the gigantic Lake Chiemsee. The “Bavarian Sea”, as it is also called, is the largest lake in Bavaria. Ships bring guests across the Chiemsee to the castle every day. In the footsteps of Ludwig II, you can still experience the royal flair and let yourself be enchanted by the pompous halls of the “Bavarian Versailles”.
Traditional craftsmanship
Upper Bavaria fascinates with its traditions. They have been passed on from one generation to the next for centuries. Goldsmiths produce special pieces of jewelry according to good old craftsmanship. Gamsbartbinder make high-quality beards for typical Bavarian costumes with great attention to detail – as was the custom in the 18th century.
Tradition and indulgence in Upper Bavaria
Munich, the “cosmopolitan city with a heart”, is generally a true temple for gourmets. Right in the center of the metropolis, around 110 dealers on more than 18,000 square meters offer the finest specialties from all over the world on the Viktualienmarkt. Local delicacies such as obazda, fresh pretzels or meat loaf are of course a must on the traditional market. Tradition also plays a major role at the festivals in Upper Bavaria: every year, the locals celebrate processions such as the Leonhardiritt. Elaborately and lovingly they decorate their horses and carriages, wear typical costumes and, like almost 200 years ago, honor the patron saint of farm animals. The cattle drive at Königssee is a very special experience for people and animals: for more than 100 years, the motorized wooden boats have been chauffeuring the “manatees” home.
