The Alcobaça Monastery, also known as the Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaça, is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture and an important historical monument in Portugal. Founded in 1153 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the monastery impresses with its imposing façade, monumental cloisters and ornate capitals. The royal tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, which tell a tragic love story, are particularly fascinating.
