Excerpt from the Roadbock
The Eastern Bavaria region comprises the areas: Bavarian Forest, Bavarian Jura, Upper Palatinate Forest and Bavarian Golf & Thermenland. For active people, connoisseurs, culture lovers, those looking for relaxation and families, this region is a real “favorite spot”. Go on a discovery tour through the largest contiguous forest mountains in Central Europe with its impressive landscapes, the traditional cities and communities and the numerous glassworks and glass processing companies. The focus is always on the fascinating material glass – with its long culture and in all its diversity.
The Bavarian Forest
Endless forests, mighty mountain ridges and gentle hilltops, small mountain lakes, above them delicate streaks of mist at dusk. This is how the largest forest landscape in Central Europe can be seen: the Bavarian Forest. The Bavarian Forest extends over around 6,000 square kilometers between the Danube, Bohemian Forest and the Austrian border. Germany’s only primeval forest lies along the border with the Czech Republic, the Bavarian Forest National Park with its untouched nature and rare animal species such as lynx and otters. More than 130 mountain peaks over 1,000 meters can be hiked, such as Arber, Osser, Rachel, Lusen, or Brotjacklriegel.
The Goldsteig routes
The famous “Goldsteig” hiking trail, Germany’s longest hiking trail, also leads through the Bavarian Forest. On the main path, the 660 km long Goldsteig leads from Marktredwitz to Thanstein, where the Goldsteig divides into two routes. The more demanding northern variant leads from Thanstein over the 1,000-meter peaks of the Bavarian Forest along the Bohemian border to Passau and crosses, among other things, the Bavarian Forest National Park. The more moderate southern route runs leisurely over the ridges of the Upper Bavarian Forest and finally ends in the city of three rivers. In addition, there is a network of approx. 840 km of circular and access routes as well as alternative routes to the Goldsteig in Eastern Bavaria and Bohemia, thus connecting the route with the respective regions and their attractions. Incidentally, the Goldsteig is one of the “Top Trails of Germany”. Those who are out and about here are welcome to explore local food and culinary delights at one of the around 70 gourmet restaurants.
The Glasstrasse – the most sparkling holiday route in Germany
Nowhere else in Germany are there so many glass processing companies as there are on Glasstrasse. Glass is more than just a commodity. Glass is fantasy, art, technology, culture, history and modernity. Get to know the German Glass Empire and the Glass Road on over 250 km across the Upper Palatinate and Bavarian Forests. Experience glass diversity with all its historical roots. From the “European Lead Crystal Center” Neustadt an der Waldnaab via Waldsassen to the three-legged city of Passau with the world’s largest collection of Bohemian glass.
